I really like this article.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Do-Pushups-to-Build-Muscle-Mass-and-Boost-Metabolism&id=359543
I have used this method w/ success, but I think the most valuable advice in the article follows:
Remember that your body will prevail, as long as you maintain your mental strength.
Remember that pain is a result of muscle wear and recovery, and should mentally represent progress, not a limitation. It will never go away, but it will greatly diminish over time as your body adjusts.
I had forgotten this recently and was letting some aches, pains and being tired get me down. After reading this article again and changing my outlook the same aches, pains, and being tired now show I am progressing. Changing your attitude may be the best thing you can do to progress.
God bless,
Veg
P.S. Of course, if you have a serious injury you should not try to work through it.
