Having spent the last four days of last week on a Silent Retreat, I'm back in business. I devoted my time to an 8' by 10' room with a single bed, a sink, and a desk, and got caught up on my reading, writing, and reflection.

And exercising.

This is not a very big area to move around in, for sure, but I found time to do Iso's out of John's IPR book, and of course, my VRT.

My working area in this small room was literally 3' by 5', but I found no problem utilizing this space for doing any and all exercises in my VRT DVD, and the ISO's in John's IPR book.

So outside of various lectures we could listen to about four times throughout the day, my time was spent exercising, reading and writing. Much like the life of a cloistered monk, except that he would perhaps exclude the exercising part of the question.

I came home to my wife, and she says, "Looks like you've been working out! And you lost weight, too! What kind of a retreat is that? Did they have a workout room of some kind?" I said yes, they did in the basement of the facility, but I never went down there. Just stayed in my room, or attended lectures in a chapel.

So here's one for those living in technologically unimproved surroundings; lose weight, gain muscle, improve your physique in a living area designed for a monk or a seminary student.

Keep in mind "Mens Sana in Corpore Sano," the Latin phrase for "A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body."

A Retreat gives the mind time to refresh and reality based existance. The Beauty of VRT/DVR is we can have any exercises machine we want in our mind, Smith Machine, Lat Machine or Chest Expander all in the twinkle of an eye. John has talked about men in jail using Isometrics such as Zass and the writings of Victor Hugo, I'd guess they also did VRT. VRT uses the knowledge base that weight lifting built but requires nothing but your own body and mind. I agree with you Greg the ancients used the same principle.

Welcome back my friend.

Greg, Glad to have you back. That is a technique that I use when I really have a problem that I am working on or just want to think things out. Even though I am single and live alone sometimes I find that sometimes it is helpful just to change the environment and get off by myself to think. DVR/VRT and isometrics are the perfect physical and mental development system as they go with us where ever we go.

Greg,

Great post and glad you’re back and refreshed.

The key, if you can do it, is to remember the experience and feeling, keep it alive in your mind and spirit so that you can retreat there (visualize) when you need to. Easier said than done.

A very simple book that touches on this subject is Total Mind Body Training – by Jacob H. Jordan. It’s written for and by a martial artist but the principles are easily applied to many aspects of life, work and competition.

Hi Mr. Mangan. I enjoyed your post and envious of your recent experience. Reminds me of one of the Transformetrics emails that Mr. Peterson sent out about the power of simplicity. In our culture it is easy to get caught up looking for the "next big thing" or the "bigger better deal." I am very appreciative to have found this forum and Transformetrics.

All the Best,

I really enjoy those kind of workouts. Whenever I travel, I never have any problems getting in a workout while in a hotel room. Plus, when I do travel I have all that downtime and nothing fills it up better than a little exercise!
