Just picked up a Makhaira Hoplite fighting short sword, some call it a knife but a 15 inch blade is more a short sword. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makhaira It is kind of a Bowie Knife married to a Kukri and as said has a 15 inch blade.
A friend is into swords, and commented a large Bowie Knife or this Makhaira are exactly what people need if they fear the end of the world is coming. Much lighter to carry than a sword, cutting power like a Samurai sword, and a magnum sized entry wound if your stabbed. I've come to think that the secret of the bowie knife was it's large size, they used the large ones like saber's and used saber fencing. Same for the Makhaira http://www.sharpblades.net/index.php?page=post&id=62
This Makhaira is big enough to fight, and handy enough to carry as well as can be used for cutting wood and digging a ditch. Same for the Bowies with large blades, I have a bowie with a 14 inch blade and that knife fits the same role.
