View Full Version : Door rows
Door rowing
I wonder if others have tried this, probably so. But for those that have not here’s another bodyweight exercise that requires no investment other than effort and imagination.
I don’t have a chin / pull up bar (yet) and the backs of the chairs that I have are not suited for chair rows. So what I do form time to time is stand in an open door way and grab the sides, palms out knuckles in, at about shoulder height. Then lean back and pull myself towards the opening somewhat like a rowing exercise. You can add verity to the exercise by placing your hands higher or lower, changing the position of your feet for a greater angle, and bending your legs.
Has anyone else done this?

Webbing can be anchored to a closed door to enable the performance of body rows & many other exercizes( eg pushups). I hope you experiment with such a setup & report in. Of course, your version sans any gizmo offers a simple, elegant way to perform body rows

I've done this initially as a streching exercise. After a while I noticed I really felt it in my lats so began doing it just as you describe. If someone doesn't have the strength to chin, this could help them build up to it. It also benefits someone who isn't able to install a chinning bar.

I haven't done that but I've been going out on my back piazza with a large bath towel,I wrap the towel around the top railing and grip the ends of the towel while putting my feet on the bottom railing or close to it and pull myself to the railing it really works the grip also my back,I've been doing this after doing pushup with the power T'S-Kevin

Gary sounds a lot like one of the variations of the hollyweed protocol I place my hands in the same position for modified door PUs, and get the feet back about four feet and loean forward. Pulling yourself forward sounds like a rowing exercise. Nice work!

GB bronze - you would reallybenefit from a jungle gym by lifeline.

The Jungle Gym looks OK but you own creation would likely be superior

Yeah, I suppose you could go to a hardware store, hope to find everything you need (assuming you know what you're looking for), take it home, hope you know what your doing when you build a "web" device, maybe get lucky and build one that may work (maybe not), put it in a door frame and trust your own skills that it won't slip or break, or you could order one from Lifeline, pop it out of the box a couple days later and use it with confidence.
Home made is NOT always better. Sometimes money spent on a product that has been researched and proven is better than saving a few bucks on something questionable you make yourself.
I mean, a person COULD make his own hammer by tying a rock to a stick, but a quality hammer bought at a store for a reasonable price will be safer and last longer.

Let's agree to disagree. I know for my puposes my easily configured webbing gizmo functions fine for pushups & rows. Moreover, it's strong enough to hold up to numerous total body isometrics; it's "Zass proof"

Grunt - I guess I was in a bad mood when I typed that. What I wrote was pretty snotty sounding. Sorry.

No problemo; I have a bias against using mailorder; I wanna try before buy. Also as a retiree I have "unlimited" time to experiment with stuff. For practical reasons, your approach is sensible for many if not most.
Mike,
Just tried that for the first time doing door pushups with my hands in the same position as when I do door rows, on the jam with palms out and knuckles in. I have done pushups in the doorway before but always with my hands positioned on the outside of the frame and the pushups seemed like a standing Atlas pushup allowing me an extended range of motion beyond a standard wall pushup. Grabbing the inside of the jam with hands in that position, turned out with knuckles in facing each other, really works my shoulders in a very different way. I’m going to have to do this on a regular basis – thanks.
