The following occurred recently in Las Vegas. I blocked out the name of the perpetrator. Following the account of the Las Vegas assault is an article about prevention through awareness. The article has some useful points and in my opinion is worth reading.

"A woman walking alone in the area of Jones Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road on about 8 p.m. Oct. 2 heard someone running toward her, and turning, saw a man approaching her, Metro Police said.

The man grabbed the woman. The incident launched an intensive effort by Metro's Sexual Assault Detail to find the man in question. He was described as about 6 feet tall, weighing about 200 pounds with a stocky build, police said. He had shoulder-length black hair.

Police said today that they have arrested 18-year-old Xxxx Xxxxxxxxxx of Las Vegas. Xxxxxxxxxx has been charged with battery with intent to commit sexual assault, sexual assault, first degree kidnapping, robbery, all one count on each charge, and two counts of open and gross lewdness."

-------

To avoid becoming a victim, you need to take charge of your own safety. There are no guarantees, but actively tuning your thoughts and actions toward crime prevention and self-defense can help lower chances of becoming a casualty.

Preventing crime from happening requires an active mind and body. It is more than just a few martial arts moves. It means paying attention to your instincts, to other people, and to your surroundings. It means constantly training your brain and limbs to act defensively. It is a way of life.

“Security has to be habitual,” says Jordan. “If you allow yourself to get into a lax way of thinking when it pertains to your security, it is very difficult to change that pattern when you find yourself [in not-so-safe situations].”

Use your head first, and do not be where the crime will occur if possible. Simple observation and forethought can arm you.

Staying alert is probably the most important thing anyone can do stay safe. I think a big part of the problem is keeping those you care about safe.

I have family members who seem intent upon thumbing their noses at every precaution I suggest. They drive through crime ridden neighborhoods with their car doors unlocked. They don’t carry self defense weapons. And they walk along dark avenues while babbling away on their cell phones, oblivious to everything going on around them.

I’m genuinely perplexed by such behavior. I’m convinced that such people actually have a death wish.

I went to Target a couple of nights ago after dark (I know I shouldn't be doing that).
I had put my keys into my jacket pocket and then I thought about you guys and got my keys back out and put my fingers into my CAT and was armed and ready.

It's good to always be aware of your surroundings.
They have had a rash of parking lot robberies in my area lately-
some even in the daytime.

Hey good for you, You are using your head. I hope you are positively influencing others among your family and friends. Goodness knows, I don't feel I'm influencing enough people about these matters.

Way to go Donna thanks for posting that. Like Royce I’m frustrated because several people close to me just will not take those common sense steps to avoid potential self defense situations.

Having the proper awareness is very much like buckling up when you get in your car. You do it because the unexpected could happen not because you are expecting an accident. We drive defensively (or should) because we want to avoid dangerous and life threatening situations. Likewise we should think and act defensively to avoid threatening life situations.

Mental attitude and body language have a lot to do with it. Many times trouble makers will start by trying to stare you down. Don't return the stares- just direct you attention elsewhere and go on about your business.
