I saw this article in The Journal of Strength & Conditioning:
http://www.nsca-jscr.org/pt/re/jscr/abstract.00124278-200711000-00017.htm;jsessionid=JYfQshHn58N9bMLyXLn8SKTxJ96vL mf16WBSc7slTJjTGTn5Q0Yc!-1031399950!181195629!8091!-1?index=1&database=ppvovft&results=1&count=10&searchid=1&nav=search
Only has the Abstract is on-line. It seems the use of imagery (visualization) yields effectiveness and confidence in the weight room.
From the Abstract:
Confidence in the ability to image was associated with both imagery use and effectiveness, and imagery use and effectiveness were associated with confidence in the weight room.
Obviously this is carries over to all forms and training and, personally, I think this carries over to all aspects of life. Visualization, "psyching up", mental preparation, goal setting; it's all the same thing and I think it's vital to all success.
IMHO,
-Joe
