bored I was sesarching ebay and came across a 1981 issue of inside kung fu with harry wongs dynamic tension method as the cover story snd a great pose of harry him self. I orderd it for 20 bucks shipping included. I was going through some of harrys specific dvrs from his book and man what a feeling of power and strength i forgot how good they feel.
harry wong is what initially got me to pursue freehand and self resistance excercise it was dec 0f 2003 was my last month of a steady weight training regimine. i remeber there was a martial arts store right next to my home, i was home on leave, i took a leiusrley stroll and was hooked the minute i picked it up i comprehended the metholodgy instintively. then came matt furey...and ultimatley transformetrics which i am most debted to. so I guess my official beginings started with dvr, but really it was not long there after I was sold on power calesthenics and ultimatly push ups as excercise of choice after reading pytp and hero profiles. but during all the push ups i dabbled in all the excercise protocols for stints and variety but always came back to the push up...but now its DVR time for awhile..probaly will do some spoardic push ups along the way till i come back full circle.

Hey Superbeast,

I love Harry Wong's book too, and like you, it was the first self resistance exercises Id ever seen. Also, it took many years before I finally believed they worked. I wish I had been sold on the idea years ago when I bought the book (about 16 years ago!!).

I agree with george too, you look unreal man!! A total inspiration to us all.

Superbeast...I too enjoy your posts and you inspire me in my workouts.
I purchased Harry Wong's book back in 1980 when it was originally
titled " Dynamic Tension". I was doing a lot of running and some karate
and this book fit right in with my need for functional workouts. I still have
the book and I am fortunate to have purchased the Video which is a very
good presentation of the movements. As a side note, keep us informed on
your training, as I said, it does inspire us all.

Older trainers would be wise to have DVRs as the foundation of their workouts; mobility drills done with varying DVR intensity will "lubricate" aging joints. Simulating slow motion moves of a martial artist is a fun way to work dem joints.

SUPERBEAST;
That's a great find. I also have the original version titled 'Dynamic Tension' as opposed to newer versions called 'Dynamic Strength'. It's about 25 years old and is a little worse for wear but that's the case with most of my books. It's a good resource.
I am glad I got IPR in spiral rather than the bound edition. My copy of PYTP has seen better days. But a well worn book means it has been put to good use.

hey friends, this is a great place to come and have a meeting of minds. DVRS are really the perfect type of mind and body excercise for lifelong health and vitality I think mcsweeney was right. It is good and very fourtunate to have grasped the DVR concept later than never. I wish more people were opened minded to unconventional methods, but if you think way back before mordern age fitness ideals, these were conventional methods of excercise. But they are our conventional methods.

Kelbiz- is there any change in content from the two titles? I also have the tape I burned it to dvd though and also a computer file, I dont think I could ever find another copy in this life.

I think to ultimately grasp DVR and not blow it off as weird muscle flexing, you must veiw it physiologically at how the body is wired and constructed if you do that it should be clear how it could work. then second a very strong unwavering will power to use your internal energies to direct and build power and strength. Its really elementary.

Superbeast, I agree that thinking about how the body is wired can help with this type of training. But a huge reason why I like the methods on this site, is that many of the exercise are very similar to what i learned in kung fu. In class, there weren't the cool names for the exercises like there are here. We just called them, "forearm exercises", or stances. But its funny how different styles and schools of training can have sooo much in common. As an intersting side bar, my kung fu teacher would always talk about how when training in the art, your doing exercises that make you healthy, enabling you to train and be healthy for a life time. Sounds kinda familiar huh?

Everyone take care,

Matt

SUPERBEAST

I only have the first printing of Harry Wong's "Dynamic Tension" so I cannot say as to how it compares to "Dynamic Strength". I assume (always a dangerous move) that only the title changed due to trademark rights owned by Charles Atls, Ltd.
I have never seen the DVD/Tape version, maybe someone hasl put it on YouTube. I will check it out.

I have not yet received the magazine, but when I do, I will defiantly post about it, sometimes in articles you learn more about a subject than a whole book. In regards to the book title change I reckon no more than a title change took place. Also the tape clarafies alot of the excerices they are performed way differntly than read some were done with alot more quickness, the tape also shows a few moves not in the book and viceversa. they really complement each other. If I can figure out how to upload to youtube I could post some material. also it seems Mr, Wong just went into hideing it would be nice to see him get active and in the public eye again. then again maybe hes done his peace and is content IDK who knows. And yes its good to see kung fu dojos and martial arts studios staying true to the ancient mystic methods.

I have both versions of Harry Wong’s book – Dynamic Tension and Dynamic Strength. The title is the only change inside every thing is the same. There’s actually a 3rd print it’s titled Dynamic strength but has a red background. It’s been some time since I’ve actually seen it but if memory serves me I think that the cover photo was actually a little different, MR Wong looked a little older and more muscular.

I also have a copy of the tape somewhere. By now it’s probably deteriorated quite a bit. As stated it has a few exercises that were not in the book but is missing (I think 2 or 3) exercises that are in the book.

Hi all,

I really want to see the Dynamic Strength tape. I found a company who does the DVD:-

http://superiormartialarts.com/cgi-bin/uniform/perlshop.cgi

I may buy it next year (things a bit tight at the moment). I've had a look on youtube, nobody's put it on.

I also tried to contact Mr Wong but found no contact details anywhere on the net, I did read that he owned a restaurant and was doing quite well from that, but I didn't find out where.

Yes, hopefully he'll re-appear one day. I wonder how old he is now, would be interesting to see if he carried on with his Dynamic Strength methods.

Did you ever upload the video to youtube?

Hi Jeff,

Search the Youtube site under Hary Wong or Dynamic Strength. That would be the easiest way to find out if Cassidy ever uploaded it. In the interim, someone else may have. May I also suggest that if you google "Living Strength" with K.C. Craichie, he has an episode of his show with John demonstrating McSweeney's Tiger Moves.

Thanks. I checked, but it's not on there. But I did find Harry Wong in a google search. http://www.davidchowfoundation.org/trusteesN.html. Him in 2007 presenting an award: http://www.davidchowfoundation.org/pre2008wardgalleryN.html. Looks to be in great shape still.

Hey Cassidy,

Thanks for responding to this. I hope all is well. There is a DVD of McSweeney available someone found on another website. There was another thread about this recently. Just search McSweeney.

McSweeney's system can be boiled down into a few things:

1. Practicing constant repetition of strikes and blocks.

2. Strikes only to vulnerable areas of the body; particularly the neck.

3. Circular motion for power, although some strikes were linear

4. Nine basic power strikes

McSweeney also taught that if you used his strikes and did them with circular motion, it would not be obvious of what you were doing or had done.

I actually just found where to buy the dvd directly from the publication company, so I went ahead and ordered it. Unique Publications changed their name to Beckett Media (www.BeckettMedia.com) and you can order the dvd for only $12.95 + $3.00 shipping through them on their internet store! Compared to the $50-60 dollars you'd have to spend at the other martial art supply websites! I went ahead and ordered it.

hello yes I have the dvd and it is good very good, but there is a more through collection of videos 2 videos for unarmed self defense, hand gun shooting, the tiger moves and armed self defense. these are of the series he shot for a cable company in Chicago in the mid 80s. I once had orderd these from a Alan Lusk who had contact info in the back of a copy of Battle Axe, and got shafted as I never received them he would always say he'll check on it or what not. but if you google fuzzy memories tv and search either tiger moves or john mcsweeney theres a spot on him in his home and clips from his self defense tapes.
