View Full Version : the eloquence of silence....

There is a brief moment just before dawn before the veil of night is lifted, and the activity of day has yet begun.

In this moment one can feel, hear, taste, smell, and be with this eloquent silence.

All over the world this moment is honored.Prayers, smudging, the establishment of Wuji, the silence of the wheel of the breath in Yoga,etc...

We don't honor silence as much anymore. It would seem that all spaces are consumed with technological sounds. It would seem that we are raising generations to fear these times, these Sacred times when you can feel and be in the Sacred pulse of the Divine.

All defining moments in our lives have had times of contemplative thought and silence.it must be so,so the entire realm of being human can integrate and find the ,'Pearl at the bottom of the sea"that resides in such moments.

My fear is that as we continue to wrap ourselves in frentic sound, enveloping all spaces,we choose to not listen any longer. To be placated by the drone of the machine as opposed to the full breath of the divine(which is silence).

What are the ramifications?Just look and see!

I remember doing a fast one time with an Elder far out in the desert. It was amazing! The silence was deafening! I remember being deeply in touch with this silence, and feeling the subtle drumbeat of Mother Earths heartbeat when suddenly WHOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM! The Air Force came by for testing. This then occured at the same time each day.I remember thinking to myself,'Is silence vanishing here on this Sacred Mother".Have we not only polluted the air,the water the earth with toxins but also the toxins of sound which are unrelenting and unstopping 24 hours a day!

Silence is intrinsic to all life.In silence all creation awaits. In this mindfull state the presence of PURE LOVE is and can be felt.We grow inwardly/outwardly in this silence.

This weekend I would like to share more reflections and ideas about fostering silence in our lives(I only write today as it is a Holiday, this weekend I shall have more time).

Please listen and enjoy the pause just before the outbreath following the inbreath. In a microcosmic sense doing this you will feel just a little this slight pause before dawn....

peace,
jason

As an aside, I'm amused by folks who workout to music. I prefer "outdoor silence" so that at least some workouts are also meditations on deep breathing

A great post, a great observation. I fasted once for five days, though at home in the suburbs. I should have allowed myself more silence, but like many, have become somewhat accustomed or addicted to sound.

I think that I appreciate silence more than many others, though. As a jaded ex-retail employee, I dealt with the onslaught of eight hours a day of the most soul crushing, generic noise, I'm sorry, Muzak, you could imagine, all courtesy of the corporate satellite feed, with no volume control or option to change the station. I think it's designed to entrance shoppers and render employees more pliable. Okay, perhaps that's a suggestion which verges on the implication of something nefarious. ;)

But I agree, silence is something we've forgotten about in the age of distraction. I wonder if people are afraid of hearing their own thoughts or some inner voice. I love the joy music brings me, too, but this thread reminded me to also be quiet. Having said that, Im'a gonna shut up now and stop typing. :D

I wish my monkey mind observed more silence
