From what I understand, Mary Shelley was far from holding Christian beliefs, however, I think her book Frankenstein summed pretty well the tragedy of trying to manipulate and create life. It is an abomination.

There are so many hidden variables to tinkering with genetics besides moral and ethical concerns, disease & unforeseen mutations being a couple.
It's kinda like when there is some sort of infestation & they import some other critter to take it out & it, itself becomes an infestation. They just can't foresee all the potential problems they are going to create, it's beyond them...
Scientists & the governments that back them, talk of the future & how technology will make life better, even talking about terraforming other planets someday to make them more earth-like & habitable.
Meanwhile the earth itself is being trashed, between greed & man's simply not knowing the way out of his problems, that you begin to understand a little of what is going on in biotech as well...

The lyrics to the song the year 2525 by Zager and Evans .come to mind when reading this article.
If you get the chance rent Mary Shelley's' Frankenstein. It holds true to the book.Robert Deniro plays the creation that is more hjman than his creature.Who is the monster.

I read Brave New World when I was in college over 50 years ago. I must admit that I have been thinking about it quite a bit recently as I have seen what is going on in the world. The decoding of the human genome really opened a whole new set of concerns as far as ethics. In the Christian based nations of the West there will be some limitations on it's use,but in nations such as Red China there will be no restaints. Who knows- maybe we will see Red China field an Olympic Basketball team of genetically altered 7 footers
