Hi there, for those of you interested, I thought I'd put up a workout log of my G.U.T.S. progress as well as the climbing that I do. Like previous logs, I'll also give some thoughts on the program from time to time to kinda let people know how I'm adjusting what my body is thinking and of course just to vent.

I'm not really interested in monitoring my muscle size just losing fat. Because of this I'm not going to be taking before measurements of the body. I'm also going for consistency, meaning keeping up with hte program daily, and maintaining at least twice a week rock climbing. This has started me a little lower on the numbers, but not too much lol. If I am unable to keep up both, I'll make changes to the plan, be it not doing the workout on climbing days, or maybe not doing them the day before I climb. For now it's experiment experiment experiment.

Ideally I'm looking to drop down to about 150-154lbs or less, but I understand if I am putting on muscle and losing fat that my weight will go up. To help counter this, I will post some pictures, on 10/31/09 from how the body is looking in the morning, before I work out. If requested I might do weekly photos, but i don't know if you all want to see that! Please feel free to ask questions, or heck share some advice, and don't forget a little encouragement is always welcome ;-) Anyway, enough with the intro of this program on with the log!

Weight as of 10/29/09: 160.8 lbs as of yesterday when I started

13 for the Atlas 3's,
15 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
50 for the hindu squats. All this done in 6min and 15 seconds.
13 for the Atlas 3's,
15 for the Atlas Sit-up's

Yes I know I did the Atlas 3's wrong at the end, I'll work on that for the next time. It also took me 6 min. and 15 seconds to complete the workout. As I progress I'll be making sure i stay within the confines of the program.

Since this is day 2 here are my results from tonight's workout.

Today's weight: 160.2 lbs

14 for the Atlas 3's,
16 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
55 for the hindu squats. All this done in 6min and 15 seconds.
16 for the Atlas Sit-up's
14 for the Atlas 3's,

Time to complete 7min .3 seconds

Thoughts:

I'm happy, had some improvement today, on the numbers. Woke up feeling a little sore, but didn't get much sleep. Tomorrow if my body is okay with it I will repeat the same numbers as today since I'm going climbing all day Sunday. So if you're interested stay tuned, and if you've not started your own log I highly recommend it. For me at least it helps make me more consistent.

As promised here are the photos, I am not flexing in these, however in the last one I pulled my shoulders back a bit more to show my belly to the camera (cause i know that's what you all wanted to see!) Man do I look blue! And the photos with the flash too orange, what gives?!!?! Anyway, still got a ways to go to reach my goals, but it's not impossible, not by a long shot.

Photos as of 10/31/09

Morning Weight: 160.4 lbs

14 for the Atlas 3's,
16 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
55 for the hindu squats. All this done in 6min and 15 seconds.
16 for the Atlas Sit-up's
14 for the Atlas 3's,

Time to completion: 5min 58 seconds.

Thoughts: Wow, that was great. I'm breathing very hard right now, and pleased I not only hit the numbers of yesterday, but also finsihed a full minute faster. Hopefully this means I'll not be feeling the workout too much for c limbing tomorrow. I won't do the G.U.T.S system till after I get home from that, so my post may be a good bit later.

In regards to time, I am looking at the stop watch as I do this to make sure that I do everything within the appropriate time lines. While that's easy right now, as my numbers are low, i'll make sure to be careful that as I get to higher numbers that I don't push those time limits, while continuing to maintain good form.

In general I'm feeling great, and i know by mid day i'll be wishing for another workout, only downside to trying to ramp up appropriately. Looking forward to seeing how I do with tomorrows climb.

Workout: climbed for 8 hours today, no energy left for G.U.T.S ready for it tomorrow though!

Today's weight: 161.4 lbs

15 for the Atlas 3's,
20 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
60 for the hindu squats. All this done in 6min and 15 seconds.
20 for the Atlas Sit-up's
15 for the Atlas 3's,

Time to completion: 7 min. 8.8 seconds

Overall thoughts: I will admit that it's kind of odd being done in only 7 min. However, I'm breathing hard after, and not even at normal breathing a few min. later. Taking a day off because of climbing really helped with the legs.

I think my body is adjusting well to the squats, which is why i keep upping them by 5. The Atlas 3's, they're moving slowly, and I'm too scared to push them up too fast as I use a lot of arm strength for climbing. The Atlas situps, I pushed just because it sounded like a good idea. Form is def. not up to snuff at the end of the set, but i'm still getting a core workout, and overall form in them is improving.

Tomorrow when I get home from work, if I do the workout again, I will maintain the numbers I achieved today. This is mostly because I'm supposed to go climbing tomorrow night. I'm very interested to see what happens if I try and do both on the same day, if it burns me out or if i can do it. Right now I would say that most likely I will only be able to do G.U.T.S. on days I'm not climbing, but the jury is still out on that.

Today's weight: 160.8 lbs

15 for the Atlas 3's,
3 for the Atlas Sit-up's

Thoughts: Came home from work and started to do the G.U.T.S. workout and I could tell very quickly that my stomach had been pushed too far yesterday. I will not do anymore, and just climb tonight, then get back to the program tomorrow. I knew i should keep the numbers moving slowly so not to burn out, however I didn't listen to myself.

Ah well, it'll be nice to get back to it tomorrow, and hopefully the stomach won't be too hurt.

Just got back from climbing for a couple hours. I can say for certain that today didn't go super well. I had to huge leg cramps in my calves that basically had me laying out for a bit. I'm not sure but it might have been from the squats lowering my overall strength while i'm in the buildup phase. I'm not that worried though as I'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow and decided what to do with my workout accordingly.

Today's weight: 160.8 lbs

15 for the Atlas 3's,
20 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
65 for the hindu squats
20 for the Atlas Sit-up's
15 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 6min and 47 sec.

Thoughts: Wow, I got home and was NOT feeling like working out, my stomach hurts, along the upper end and I figured the ab workout would kill me. I decided though to help motivate myself and put on Biggest Loser, and found the drive to go. So off I went and completed same numbers for the 3's and sit-ups and added to the squats. I also looked at the time, and I"m able to do those squats in just a few min. It's really the endurance that is missing from my legs, but as can be seen, I'm not only working on it but showing increased success!

Tomorrow I plan to up the Atlas 3's by 1 a piece and if my stomach is feeling better up the situps by 1. The squats are def. going to be upped by 5. Hooray progress.

I know you're not trying to bulk up, but have you added any additional calories/protein to your fuel to compensate for the extra activity? A small amount can make a big difference in your recovery. A large amount can make a big difference in your belly.....

Just an intrusive question.
Thanks,
Cliff

11-04-2009, 10:56 PM
Why yes, I am intaking a bit more protein and have lwoered overall fat intake, except when I'm trashing my body from time to time. Overall things seem to be working, aside from the stomach being overworked. My arms have not come to that feeling of pain yet, which I am pleased about.

PS - I don't mind intrusive questions, especially when they're phrased politely such as yours ;-)

Today's weight: 160.6 lbs

16 for the Atlas 3's,
21 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
70 for the hindu squats
21 for the Atlas Sit-up's
16 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 7min and 14.9 sec.

Thoughts:

Yowzers, today was hard, the pushups were even getting me a bit at the end. I'm happy to report I finished though, and I'm thinking that tomorrow I may have to do the workout I had today. I'm pleased that it's still taking me about the same time though I'm improving the numbers.

For those wondering it takes me about 25 seconds to hit 16 atlas 3's. Those squats take forever lol, but I want to keep improving them so I can get closer to the elite level.

Today's weight: 160.6 lbs

16 for the Atlas 3's,
21 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
70 for the hindu squats
21 for the Atlas Sit-up's
16 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 7min and 15.2 sec.

Thoughts:

Good workout, stalled on starting for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. Def. breathing hard now, and my body was having some trouble keeping up. I will only add tomorrow if my body is ready. Hopefully I'll at least be able to hit the same numbers. HOnestly the way I'm feeling right now, I'm not certain.

Today's weight: 159.4 lbs

17 for the Atlas 3's,
21 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
70 for the hindu squats
21 for the Atlas Sit-up's
17 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 7min and 12.9 sec.

Thoughts:

Woke up this morning and was feeling great, getting a full nights sleep did wonders. I wasn't sore at all, and I was debating increasing numbers. In the end I decided to increase my pushups. So those numbers went up by 1. Didn't increase anythign else today, and my body was def having a hard time with the last 2 pushups. Still though, glad I did the workout. The question now being will I do it tomorrow before rock climbing or not. Only time will tell!

22 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
70 for the hindu squats
22 for the Atlas Sit-up's
17 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 7min and 12.9 sec.

Thoughts:

Allright, another day down, and I haven't even rock climbed yet! I was debating if i would do GUTS today or not, but my body felt fine, plus I ate a ton of stuff that was REALL bad for me yesterday. Though in moderation it's okay. I also upped the situps and i maintained the same weight, which i thought was going to be larger for sure. This def. makes me happy to be maintaining even after a day of bad eats.

I also feel like I'm getting stronger all around. I wasn't burnt out this morning doing the pushups at all. If this will cary over to tomorrow after I've done some climbing today, well we'll see!

omad0n
11-08-2009, 07:16 PM
So I did some climbing today. Let me say that first off, GUTS did not leave me feelign burnt out this morning. Secondly, the climb went better then i expected , though i was a bit lower on endurance. I'm happy to see that GUTS as foundational work seems to going well. I credit the low numbers so my body is getting used to it al lat an appropriate pace. I'll make sure to post how I feel tomorrow when I get up.

Today's weight: 160.4 lbs

17 for the Atlas 3's,
22 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
75 for the hindu squats
22 for the Atlas Sit-up's
17 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 7min and 10.9 sec.

Thoughts: Weight was a little up today, but I'm not concerned about it, the goal is, even if slowly to keep moving down. To get rid of more of the fat. I've been feeling fairly tight for most of the day. When I did the workout this evening I was surprised I wasn't more sore. The sit-ups I could def. feel, so another day of the same, and since I'm doing a pushup workout tomorrow, I think I will need to just do the same workout tomorrow.

I'm happy though, again was able to add some numbers and not feel burnt out! Still, I know I need to get those squats up, John says the 12 min. is important, but I can honestly say I'm moving at a pace that is very comfortable for me, and I'm feeling like my body is starting to join me!

Today's weight: 160.8 lbs

17 for the Atlas 3's,
22 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
75 for the hindu squats
22 for the Atlas Sit-up's
17 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 7min and 4.3 sec.

Thoughts: Whew, got home from a dinner and hit the exercise almost immediately. Good thing I had been on the bus for about 30 min to let the food settle! Off to rock climbing for now, we'll see if I'm able to keep up or not. GUTS went fine though. The initial set of Atlas 3's was a little stiff, as my body was warming up, but I made it through the final set just fine. If all goes well, I'm hoping to increase some the pushups by 1 tomorrow and the squats by another 5.

I will edit this post once I get home from climbing.

Additional thoughts:

Def. noticed the impact on my climbing. I'm not as smooth as I would like to be, but I suppose the body is still adjusting so it will take time. I may take a couple days off GUTS if I decide to compete in a bouldering competition next week. We'll see what happens. I'm also looking forward to sleep tonight.

Today's weight: 160.0 lbs

18 for the Atlas 3's,
22 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
85 for the hindu squats
23 for the Atlas Sit-up's
18 for the Atlas 3's,
Milo - Full routine

Total Time: 11min and 14.3 sec.

Thoughts: So, I received and e-mail from John (thanks for the response) that I should include the Milo, to maximize my gains. I added it tonight and did it for 3min and 50 seconds before being finished. My timing was a little off, but I'll be able to adjust that fine. I'm breathing pretty hard, but I was able to catch a lot of my breath during the Milo.

Overall I thought that it was great that I added 1 atlas 3 to each set and 10 crunches. I also had 1 extra sit-up, as I kept going on the sit-ups on accident for an extra on the second set before i realized what i was doing. The arms are feeling good from the Milo, i'll have to see how they feel tomorrow though. More info as it comes in!

90 for the hindu squats
23 for the Atlas Sit-up's
18 for the Atlas 3's,
Milo - Full routine

Total Time: 12min and 14.1 sec.

Thoughts: So, it took me a little longer to complete the workout today. About a full min, that being said I increased atlas situps and hindu squats. I'm feeling great, but sweating pretty hard. I timed the Milo out for 4 min. again, though my rhythm is still off. Regardless I'm feeling good, and body is adjusting very well. I'm happy to say that I'm feeling like I could increase the numbers again tomorrow, which is nice.

The squats are especially feeling nice. Like i'm in good form, and not burning out at all. I also think the situps are getting easier, though I'll know tomorrow for sure. If it keeps up though I"ll be able to add another to those. The form still isn't perfect, but it's stabling a lot as my body gets accustomed to the higher reps.

I think basically I get the numbers up a little, but it's still not "pushing it" to the limit, so my body uses that extra strength to tighten the form up. Or maybe i jsut concentrate on it a bit more. either way I'm certain as I keep moving things will fall into better and better form.

Thoughts:

Had a buddy with me tongiht and i had her try. She did standard pushups, atlas situps hindu squats (in poor form) and then bicycle sit ups and then a few pushups. Did one set of milo and was done. She called it a "warm up" but she def. was having a hard time keeping up wiht me and I 'm not even hitting the big numbers yet! Anyway time for rock climbing now. Will post more later.

18 for the Atlas 3's,

Total Time: 12 min and 54.9 sec.

Thoughts:

Sources say my stomach was hurting before I started, and my legs were sore. So I decided not to try and up any numbers. Instead I just focused on getting through the routine as best I could. True I added an extra min. but I was able to get everything done and without breaks.

I also wanted to point out that I did rock climb last night, that was pretty good. Did a lot of routes though at sub maximal level to strengthen some of my endurance.

Finally, I'm still enjoying GUTS, and toying with taking 1 day in the next week or 2 to try and do the workout in the allotted time, and just put as many reps in as I can, and using breaks. I'm not sure when I'll do that, since I'm pretty sure it'll burn me out. I'll keep the log updated though as I move along.

Yup, worked out today . I woke up feeling surprisingly fresh. I upped all numbers today. I am unsure if I will have time to go climbing today, but at least my numbers are up and I've passed that 100 mark on the crunches. That makes me very happy. I think my form suffered a little bit on the pushups, as in I wasn't going down as far as I should. So I think tomorrow I will concentrate more on letting myself dip a little lower. A note:

Yesterday I left for work at 6:40am and came home about 10pm. Decided I wasn't going to do GUTS, so I jsut had a day off. Good workout tonight, happy to increase some numbers. Weight was surprisingly high today, but it'll work itself back down. I'm digging that the numbers are getting easier to add. I"m certain that I will come to a point where I need to slow down again and let my body catch up, but for now I'm good with what's going on. There's a bouldering competition tomorrow which I'm probably going to be taking part in, so we'll see what I can do workout wise later.

Thoughts:

Sources say that I did not compete in the rock climbing event today. I didn't wake up in time, and figured if I couldn't wake up w/o an alarm i probably needed the sleep. I also got all of my numbers up today, and that's always a positive feeling.

Tomorrow I won't be raising the atlas 3's as I want to take a day to focus on the form of those. I may raise the other numbers depending on how my body feels in the morning. My overall strength feels good, so I'm hoping that I will at least get to the full atlas 3's by the first full week of January. Not sure how the rest of the numbers will go.

What follows is the break down of what i'm hoping to get by January 9th, 7 weeks from today. I think that it would be fairly safe to assume that I can raise my hindu squats by 10 a week for the next 7 weeks which should have me at 185, in 1 set. The pushups if I can increase by 2 a week for the next 7 weeks will put me at 37 and the sit ups if I can increase by 2 each week will have me at 41.

So to surmise, I'm hoping that in 7 weeks at a minimum I can increase myself to

37 for the Atlas 3's
41 for the Atlas Sit-ups
185 for the Hindu Squats
41 for the Atlas Sit-ups
37 for the Atlas 3's
and full course of the Milo

I've been following your progress, I was interested to see how GUTS affected your climbing. It appears that your body is handling the additional work load quite well. I will not be suprised when your climbing starts to improve as well as your GUTS training.

Have fun,

Thanks Cliffa. All in all it def. hasn't hurt it, though I admit I have climbed a little less over the past week and a half or so . Just time being what it is. I'm hoping to get out twice this week for it. I've also taken your advice on the protein, and started to add whey into my diet. Having it as a breakfast shake . That seems to be helping things too. If you've any other suggestions please let me know :) Today I clocked in at 157.6 but I'm almost certain that's me being super dehydrated as I was up late with my buddies drinking and being silly. I will do the GUTS workout a little bit later today, in the next hour or so most likely.

Total Time: 9min. and 24.4 sec.

Thoughts: Well, the time was a god bit shorter today, 4 min. shorter to be exact. I'm not 100% certain what made my body basically give out, but I've got a couple thoughts. First the experience; about 80 squats in I could feel my body having a hard time keeping up. I being a "smart" individual kept going to get those finished, then figured since I was laying down for the situps I would be able to get those done. That went all right, then came the final pushups. When i started the chairs slid further apart, causing me to use different muscles in my chest for the pushups. I didn't want to stop. I gave the last 20 pushups all I had, to complete the set.

I stood up to do the milo but could feel waves of unpleasantness (not pain) run through my body, realized i couldn't go on and went to the couch flopped on it and started breathing very heavy. Took me about 5 min. to recover, and I haven't had an experience like that in a long time. I think a couple of the things that went into making the workout turn out like that were... the chairs moving and being very dehydrated from drinking last night. Screwy thing is I have felt fine all morning, but when push came to shove my body said nope! So I'll have to keep that in mind as I move forward.

I'm even more convinced now that yesterday was in large part a product of the chairs being spread too far apart. I finished today with no problem, lots of sweat, but no problem. Amazing how width of pushups can still give me such a hard time. Tomorrow I have climbing and GUTS. Unfortunately i won't be able to do GUTS till after the climb so we'll see what i can do, unless I'm able to hit t in the morning. All in all I'm very happy about the workout and that the numbers were no problem today.

Oh, and it doesn't hurt that my weight stayed the same today!

What an interesting day. I woke up today feeling kind of tired after getting 8 hours of sleep, so I figured I would jsut see what I could handle as the evening set. First order of business of course was rock climbing, as I had to go straight out from work. I haven't been climbing in about a week, and I'm pleased to report that while my endurance is somewhat down overall I was able to climb what I could before, just had to take my time. I would've liked to climb more then the hour and a half i got in, but the climbing gym closed. Oh well there's always next time.

I then returned home feeling good from the climb and wondering if I would be able to hit my numbers in GUTS. Let me say that it wasn't too bad at all, could feel the pushups a little towards the end, and the situps were noticeable up front, but the crunches went just fine with the pace I was keeping. I'm confident that tomorrow I will be able to keep upping some of the numbers. Thinking it'll be a good day to add on pushups and maybe the situps.

Right now I feel great, and I think that starting next week I will try and get myself on a morning routine for GUTS, which is only possible for me because of a later start time at work. No guarantee I'll be able to do that, but stay tuned :)

Oh and as for the weight, not complaining about it at all, but still not confident it's really there yet. I'll know better tomorrow when I get a normal dinner instead of some eggs and a protien shake like i've done the past couple nights since I didn't want too much heavy stuff in me

Firstly, I never got a workout in yesterday, didn't make it home till aroudn midnight and needed to get some rest for the big turkey day! So unfortunately I'm I day behind. My weight for yesterday was 157.2. So all that being said, time for my thoughts on today's workout!

As you can see the weight is up a bit, but that's what i expected with getting a full dinner. At least it didn't shot up as far as I was worried. Hopefully it means I'm actually starting to lose that fat! I also noticed that I improved the pushups by 6 on both sides! One might wonder how on earth I did it. Well I'll be honest and say it was sort of dumb luck.

Basically I was doing the first set up pushups, and thought I needed to be at 29, so I just kept pushing till I hit that. It felt a little strained though and so I looked over at my chart and noticed I should've been at 25! No time to waist though I moved into the sit-ups. Those went well so I upped them by 1, and I knew I was going to push the squats a little today. It's interesting, my numbers with the squats are getting higher but my timing on them is getting a little behind . I should be hitting the 100 mark in them at 4 min. to stay on track for the elite goal, and I was doing that for a long time. Lately its been dropping a bit though. I feel more powerful in the legs though, which is a plus.

Finally, well today is Turkey day, so I'm off to enjoy times with friends, but I'll be back tomorrow with another workout where I just want to hit the same number of pushups, and maybe add to the sit-ups.

Goodness, eat a little crazy on Turkey Day and pay for it later! Really though, the weight isn't too much of an issue. Now if it keeps going up that's a problem, however I suspect that it will find its way back down around 157 fairly quickly.

With regard to the workout itself, it was a SUCCESS! I'm very happy to report that I was able to repeat the pushups add to the situps and stay fine on the squats. I even got the time down a bit on the squats so that it's closer to the 100 every 4 min. mark.

Arms are overall a bit used, but I bet I could go climbign later today, and I may do just that! I also noted that today I had a decent amount of booze in me from thanksgiving. That didn't slow me down a bit. I'm even more convinced now that the issue I had earlier this week was that the chairs slid apart. Anyway that's all for now, time for a protein shake and planning of the day.

Just back from climbing, was there abotu an hour and a half.

Let me say that the bouldering felt great. Took me a little bit to get warmed up to it, but once I started getting into it I was really happy. It felt like I was able to do some stuff that I shouldn't be able to do with my infrequent climbing lately. I feel like if I can get back to my solid climbing schedule it will really take me up to the next level which is what I'm looking for. Looking forward to more climbing, more GUTS and continued improvements in both!

Harsh routine this morning! I don't know if it's because I rock climbed last night on top of the workout during the day, or if it's just that I'm not used to doing the routine so quickly after I get up. I suppose I'll find out as I continue through the week. I was able to complete the full routine, but man, was it rough. I will def. need to do the pushups at the same number. Weight is about .2 lbs up from yesterday which I forgot to post. Overall energy levels were up this AM before i even started the routine, however I wasn't able to complete all the Atlas 3's. I am not sure if this is a morning thing, because i'm climbing more, or because i didn't have enough calorie wise before starting the workout. I did it on a glass of OJ, tomorrow I will try a glass of chocolate milk and see if that helps. Though I'm also aware tomorrow will be interesting because I'm climbing tonight. Oh well, all I can do is carry on :)

Today's weight: 156.6 lbs

Thoughts: Yesterday I hit the climbing gym, lasted about an hour. I was def. lower on energy for it then I would've liked. I was able to climb at about my usual level, but the endurance was down sharply. I also noticed that when I woke up this morning I was not feeling rested despite getting 8 hours sleep.

These indicators mean that I'm likely on the cusp of overtraining which really stinks, because I have been pleased with the progress I've been making. All that being said though, I decided to give myself a day off to rest and heal. I wish it weren't the case, but not much else I can do. To run myself ragged would only set me up for even longer down time. Tomorrow hopefully I'll feel back to rights and can get on with the program.

Overall I'm pleased with the program, but seem to have hit a minor stumbling block. I don't think my body likes the AM workouts, but it's going to be that or nothing as soon my work schedule changes further pushing me into working even later in the evening.

Sources say that I was abel to get the workout done again, and feeling pretty good about it. That day of rest plus not doing it this Am seems to have worked. Thoughts:

So, numbers are a bit weird eh, and I didn't workout yesterday!??!? What gives you say? Well, if you take a look at the time to complete you'll see that I did the workout as specified for the full 24 min. (or pretty close to it) What follows is an explanation of some of the whonkyness plus just how the whole things feels now that I'm done with it.

Starting off today was the Atlas 3's and I was able to push out about 30 of them in roughly 30 seconds which is what I normally hit. So I went for more, but found that while the mind was willing the muscles weren't exactly co-operating. Despite this I pushed on, and was able to get out 6 more. What did I do with any downtime I had in that set? I'll tell you what I did, I held the up position of the pushup with the best form I could muster. Now that the first minutes over lets move to the sit-ups.

Having hit the wall when I reached my normal number of pushups I was anticipating something similar with the sit-ups. Thing is, that never happened. I hit 32 and then I just kept going, though a little slowed down. I had to keep looking at my timer because I couldn't believe that I was still doing sit-ups and the time wasn't up. I finished off at 52 with decent form, and I'm confident that as my strength and endurance improve the form will as it has in the past. Having finished the sit-ups and starting to sweat pretty hard I found that it was time for the tiger bend squats!

Honestly, when I started I was already feeling semi-gassed from having pushed myself harder then normal for the beginning part of the routine. Despite that I pushed onward. I made a goal to hit at least 140 in a single set, and that's exactly what I did. I was def. breathing hard and the sweat was starting to drip off the tip of my nose to the floor, but looking at the clock I saw that i still had a lot of time left for work! So after a 3 second break ( watched the clock) i started up again and put out another 60, then followed that with a 4 second break. In the middle of that set I began to get pretty shakey and could tell the form was really suffering, but a funny thing happened near 160-170. It was almost imperceptible at first, but I noticed that things were somehow getting easier. The best analogy I have for it is what runners call breaking through the wall where things become easier and fall into place. My form improved and I just kept plugging away. I was able to get another 20 out before i needed a slight break (aroudn 2 seconds), then the final 20 for my grand total of 240. I would like to point out that for a guy who hasn't worked on his legs in a long time aside from climbing, and who was getting gassed well under 100 consecutive squats a month ago, this is fantastic and exciting for me! However, we're only through 3 of the exercises and have 3 more to go!

Next up was a repeat of the sit-ups. I was def breathing hard but abel to get myself up. I'd be lying though if I said the form was stellar. I could feel and see the ways I was helping msyelf like using my arms to help get myself up instead of just my core. It was also unintentional that I hit 52 again, especially because i took a couple 4 second breaks in that section. Finally onto the last set of pushups.

Now here's the silly thing, I get up on the chairs, and I'm sweating buckets now, watching a little pool form underneath my nose, but this isn't going to stop me, I do 1 pushups, and i can just feel that my body barely has anything left to give, so I do another and feel that there's even less in the tank. i would liek to point out that a week ago I had a very bad experience pushing myself too far when the chairs split apart on me and I was doing wide pushups. Well not today, nope I just kept at it, and then I had to plank for a little, then realized i should at least get some knee pushups to finish off, but not sooner had i started those and I saw that my last minute was gone. I think n the future when i do full routines like this when i know i"m not going to get anymore i'll just move to normal pushups, which I hadn't tried and honestly didn't even cross my mind because i was breathing so heavy.

And now it comes to the last exercise, the Milo. Well I hate to disappoint, but that wasn't so bad. PArt of why I like the Milo is you can be as hard or easy on yourself as you like. The only way to get better is to push, and push I did, but as my body wouldn't give anymore I simply would modify the tension throughout. I also should note that I do the milo in 1 min. sections so that it's 1 min for 20 1 min for the other 20 1 min for 15 then a final min for the other 15. This helps me stay consistent with how long I'm doing each rep and also just makes it easier for me to mentally get through it.

So there you have it, my exposition on the whole routine and the numbers. So now the last thing you all might be wondering is how do I feel? Well to be honest after it I was sweating a lot and went straight for a protein shake, nothing added but the whey. It's been about 25 min. now since i finished, and I can honestly say I'm feeling really good. My body feels light, though tired, but I'm not feeling super run down. I'm not sure how my legs are going to feel tomorrow, but I suppose I'll just have to wait and see. I've taken the photos as well, documenting what i look like now, and will be posting those up here a little later today after I find the cable.

I hope you've all found something useful from this, or at least maybe a little entertaining. I'm always happy to answer questions and I'll continue to post on progress and updates as they're available.

well, it's the next day and I figured I would update everyone. First I would like to say I'm not in nearly as much pain as I expected. The legs were not nearly as sore as I had feared. The arms don't feel any soreness at all, stomach same thing. I did however notice that my lower back is sore, so perhaps that was from the form I was using.

I did not do any workout today, and instead gave myself some rest. One may wonder why if my pain levels were so down. Well in large part it's due to the fact that I only go t 4 hours of sleep, and figured my body could use the rest. The other part, I don't think my body would've reacted so pleasantly had I tried GUTS again today. However I will give it a go tomorrow.

First of all the weight! My goal is to be a steady 154 as I haven't been that low in about 4 years, So to be back there would be wonderful. Especially as I keep toning up and dropping fat. Almost as exciting is that I was able to complete the workout today with overall improved numbers!

It's remarkable, I came home falling asleep on the bus ride back and not motivated for GUTS, but at it I went, and I found that I was able to finish it and am feeling great presently. I'm very curious to see how the climbing goes tomorrow (no GUTS) and then how I feel on wednesday. More info as it comes.

Today's weight: 156.0

Today I climbed for about 1 and a half hours.

Thoughts:

Today was an interesting day, it's the first time I've climbed since taking on GUTS the way John intended it. I will say this, firstly my body felt much better today then it did the last time I tried GUTS all out. So much so that I feel like I'll be able to make GUTS a more regular thing for me. Secondly I wanted to point out that I had a decent climb tonight that was hindered by some slightly fatigued arms and some old injuries that are acting up. These injuries don't relate to GUTS at all, and are just finger ones that take time to heal.

I felt like the climb tonight went decently, but not spectacularly. As I said there were some obstacles, but I felt like I was keeping up reasonably. I was frustrated with the finger issues, but those aside I could tell my muscles were tired. I believe that will get taken care of though as my body adjusts to the new routines even further. All in all I'm very happy with my current weight as I believe it's a good step in evening out. I still have the weight goal of hitting 154 by January 9th, but GUTS has shown me that I can reach even further with my goals, and I'm setting a new goal of 145 by june of next year. Now to be at that weight means 11 lbs off of what I weight now, which comes out to less then 2lbs a month until then. I believe this is very reasonable and manageable. Obviously as always if I find that i've gotten rid of the fat and my weight is higher, that would be okay, the target weight is mostly revolving around fat. If people have questions I'll try and post some info as avail. until the next time I check in, have a good one everybody :)

Well well well, it's GUTS again. Sources say just a quick run down the workout thoughts lane. Today I noticed I was able to increase the pushups on the front, but was much weaker on the back. I htink this is a trend that may continue for a bit while my body plays catchup, but if I'm feeling good tomorrow I will be doing anothe GUTS routine.

I also wanted to note that while the squats were lower in number I was able to finish them with room to spare, meaning I just needed to be pushing a little harder to get my numbers up. I'll try and keep that in mind for the next workout. Honestly I'm amazed at the gains I've been making with the squats, they're improving the fastest and it's the most surprising.

The situps I added numbers to both ends, and I think that I'm able to keep up with them, because I'm not being pushed far enough on the front. But form is still needing work, but is def getting better. More as the workouts continue!

Been a few days since I posted, but I've been keeping up with the weight numbers.

The 10th I was up to 157 (day of rest)
the 11th down to 156.2 (went rock climbing for one hour)
12th maintained at 156.2 (day of rest)

So with so many days off lately, and starting another new schedule ( though probably the last schedule change for me for the next 6 months or so) I've got a new week to start out and keep working towards my goals. I was going to go rock climbing today, but woke up a bit late what with the bus schedule and all. No time for thoughs after the workout, just numbers. Maybe thoughts when I get home.

So the numbers are a little down in some areas, while being up in others? What gives you ask... well if I had to take a guess, I would say that it's because i had nothing to eat before the workout this morning. Instead I jsut waited till I was up a half hour and did the routine. Now this isn't normally what I do. Generally I'll have a small drink of oj or milk before i dod the workout, to give my body something to work with. Let me say, w/o either of those I kept getting gassed earlier then I wanted to. All in all, not bad for the numbers though.

Stay tuned as I'll be hitting GUTS again tomorrow, and then figure out what's going on w/ tuesday ( i fly out of town) and working out.

40 for the standard pushups
50 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
230 for the hindu squats
55 for the Atlas Sit-up's
25 for the standard pushups
Milo - Full routine

Time: 23min 54.1 seconds

Thoughts: Today i'm in Colorado over 5,000 ft above sea level and ya know what? GUTS didn't kill me :-D. I only did standard pushups as I didn't want to create too much of a ruckus in my father's gym (condo workout room) Goodness knows I was an interesting enough specimen to those there since I was doing all body weight stuff back to back.

I'm pleased that I was able to get as far through the workout as I did. Wish I was able to do a bit more on the pushups, but while I'm out of town I'm hoping I can push those standard pushup numbers to the 50's. It should be a bit easier since I'm not rock climbing during the week.

i'd also like to point that my weight was taken at 5am today, instead of the usual 9am, so that might have affected it being a little higher then it otherwise would've been. Don't have time to write more or clean this up as I've family coming over and I need to start cooking them dinner! I'll be sure to get a workout in tomorrow and hopefully will be able to make a more informative post. Happy Holiday's all,

Steve

Yesterday's weight 154.2

Thoughts: So, I didn't do the GUTS workout yesterday, and it's because of something unexpected and unpleasant. So when I did the workout 2 days ago I was wearing a different pair of workout shorts, that have belt loops. Well, those loops must've cut into my back because 2 nights ago there was a belt loop like wound. It was bad enough that i put a bandage on it and some. Def. not what I expected, but I wanted to give it some time to heal properly. I did end up do Neosporin ing some walking, but nothing too big, about 40 min. worth.

Today's weight: 153.0 lbs

45 for the standard pushups
53 for the Atlas Sit-up's and
210 for the hindu squats
45 for the Atlas Sit-up's
20 for the standard pushups
Milo - Full routine

Time: 24min 1.6 seconds

Thoughts:

The wound was doing much better today, but the workout def. aggravated it. Up side, it's not bleeding, but I noticed it being slightly aggravated during the atlas situps. I am hopeful that it feels okay tomorrow. The workout in general was a bit rough, but I made it through it and am feeling good.

Yesterday's weight 153.5

Thoughts: Unfortunately that wound on my back didn't like the exercise, so I'm going to give it a couple days to heal up properly.

Today's weight: 154.0 lbs

Thoughts: Would really love to workout today, but I would rather have a day off and make sure I'm healed right then push it now and risk more injury. Guess I'll know that those short are not good workout shorts, especially for GUTS.

45 pushups
30 pushups
20 pushups

Today's weight: 152.6 lbs

Thoughts:

What happens when you sleep past 2 alarms and wake up an hour and a half later then you're supposed to? I'll tell you what happens, no time for GUTS :(. Up side, I feel very well rested, and I did have time to whip out 3 sets of pushups to get myself a little something in today. Unfortunately though, it's about time for work, so I will be doing more GUTS hopefully tomorrow. As an update on the wound area, it's 99% healed up scab fell off , and it's not sore at all.

The weight is great, especially considering after Christmas and all that food. Hopefully it keeps moving in that direction. That way I'll reach my goal of 150 by the middle of January. If people have questions I'm happy to answer. Until next time I'm out!

50 for the Atlas Sit-up's
20 for the Atlas 3's and plank
Milo - Full routine

Time: 23min 59 seconds

Thoughts:

Crazy workout today! Body was sore from the pushups yesterday, maybe because I did the sets so close, but I pulled through anyway! Not much else to say, as it's time for work. I'll make sure to keep posting though.

Oh and the weight... exciting!

A little more on all of that, but I'm feeling good after the workout and ready for the day. Not tons of energy, but feeling good.

Nice work omad0n! Glad to hear that our Colorado altitude didn't kill you. :)

I just started G.U.T.S. recently myself and was curious how others were doing which is why I stopped by. I'm considering taking up some rock climbing myself once I get back in better shape from GUTS.

Keep up the good work,

I think it's a great idea to get back into rock climbing Duff. Only thing I would say is, just start now. Let your body get a good burn while doing it. You'll be happy you did. Plus then you can be ready for the outdoor season in Boulder come spring :-D

Thanks for the encouragement and good luck with your own path.

Thoughts:

Today was a good workout. I was def. feeling unmotivated, and procrastinated (today is my day off) and so I was just doing other things then working out. I figured I wouldn't be able to do a full routine, or the numbers wouldn't be that good. Sources say they were about average for me, though I'm pleased with the increase at the front end of the Atlas 3's. As those get to 50 and it becomes easier to get them done, I'm sure the numbers on the back end will improve too.

My weight was maintained for the day, and that was a rather nice surprise. I'm not sure what tomorrow will bring, but I guess I'll jsut find out then :)

Good climb today, and happy that the weight stayed pretty close to the 150.8. It makes me hopeful that I'll be able to maintain that weight and maybe even make more ground soon :)

Today's weight: 152.6 lbs

50 pushups
40 pushups

Thoughts:

Well, it seems I'm in a bit of a slump lately and have been gaining back weight. I attribute this to 2 things. First, that I'm not working out as much, but perhaps just as importantly my eating habits have been terrible over the last 3 days. I think it's funny that I was able to keep things together during Christmas, but New Years time has been a bit harder.

At least I know, and shouldn't have too much trouble getting back on the right road. Plus I'm still ahead of the weight that I want for Jan 9th where I want to be at 154 lbs. However the closer I am to 150lbs the better :)

Total Time: 24 min and 1.7 sec.

Thoughts:

Well, I'm happy to say that the weight is going down again. I am starting to feel better as I'm eating right compared to the past few days. Overall I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do the routine as strongly as I would like to, however overall I'm pleased with the numbers.

I'm happy to see the atlas 3's on the end gettin a bit better. Though I am frustrated that the sit-ups and the squats aren't doing a whole lot. I guess as John has stated in other threads I just need to keep pushing them and working at it. Hopefully this week I'll be able to do just that. Plans are for Climbing on wed, and maybe tuesday evening. The rest, should be GUTS. We'll see how the week plays out though :)

PS - energy levels are good right now, and I'm relaly looking forward to lunch.

I'm very surprised to have the same completion time again. Completely unintentional, but kinda funny. Anyway, the workout went well today . I woke up feeling less groggy, and was ready for the task at hand. I felt like the routine was a bit easier up front, but clearly lagged a bit towards the end.

I'm happy though that I've been able to get the weight back down, despite a couple days of it spiking back up. I've started typing up the 2 month review, but haven't posted it yet. Don't feel quite as energized as I did after yesterday's routine, but I'm not feeling run down either, so that's s a plus. Will post more as it becomes available!

OH no!!!! my timing was off today! :-D

In all seriousness, wow another day and more improvements, who could ask for anything more? I'm really happy with the workout today and the progress I'm making. Overall I'm feeling much leaner, and beginning to look it too. My body is adjusting to the work loads really well.

Looking to the weight side, I'm down again!!? how could this be? Well I think it's because I've been much better about the calories I'm putting in the last few days, and a bit of dehydration to boot. I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if I jumped up a bit tomorrow. Once I know I'm below 150lbs I'm going to add in more calories to my diet, because losing this much this quickly is not what I'm looking to do. Plus with the numbers moving up right now, my body could probably use some extra boost!

Good workout this morning, I'm happy to report that I was able to keep up some decent numbers despite being very sore from yesterday's climb. It's also nice to see the weight evening out. True I still have about 5lbs that John has inspired/challenged me to lose.

Then again, I didn't even know I was going to get below 150lbs, so it's good to know that I've been able to keep the weight moving in the right direction. Plus being 150 isn't al that bad at all :-D

So, I haven't worked out in a few days, and despite that I was stil able to keep respectable numbers. Truth be told I didn't want to workout today, but knew I needed to if I wanted to keep my strength up. I've been a bit slack since my Fiance just got back into town and I hadn't seen her for 5 months!

I think part of what's keeping me motivated is that she notices the difference in weight and has given me several lovely compliments. Her family, even over web cam, has been able to see the weight change which is also encouraging.

Overall I feel nice and energized and I'm happy that I did the workout. I've still got my goal of 145lbs, and I don't think it's an unattainable or unreasonable goal. More to come, that's for sure!

No workout yesterday. Today my weight was 150.6.

I need to get moving in the GUTS program again. I've slacked a bit, but that's okay, nothing that can't be recovered from. I am currently trying to come up with a plan for how I'm going to tackle GUTS again now that I'm climbing more regularly. Stay tuned!

Today's weight: 151.2

Exercise: Climbing for 1hr 20min.

Thoughts: So, I've come down with a nasty cold, and honestly it's demotivating. However I was able to get myself out and climbing and will be taking it easy for now. Hopefully tomorrow I will feel up to snuff for some GUTS as I feel like I've fallen off that band wagon a bit.

Weight overall is up again, and I'm think it's in part due to eating my meals a bit later then I had been. Still experimenting w/ it all a bit. So more info as it becomes available!

Today's weight: 150.0 lbs

Thoughts: No workout today. I woke up feeling a bit light headed and i don't think doing GUTS will help me at this point. Just need to keep resting. I know when I come back to GUTS i'm going to be really deduced in my numbers but that's okay. I've a plan for building them back up that will hopefully be a cross between what I was doing orig. to get my numbers up and what I am currently at.

The up side is that my weight is down and I'm hoping it will stay that way. I like being around 150, and I'm still shooting for 145!

Steve,
There is a difference between a setback/falling off the wagon and quitting.
Give yourself permission to wait until you are over your cold, and then get back to it.

Good job with the weight loss, keep it up!

Thoughts:

Why hello friends! It's been quite a while since I posted on GUTS, and that's because I had been sick. The workout log reflects accurately that the last time I did GUTS was back on 1/12/10. Since then I have been rock climbing 3 x a week, but not doing GUTS. I honestly felt like doing GUTS would've been too difficult with my stuffed up airways and nasty cough. So, getting back to it today was something I had been anticipating and also dreading.

As a way of letting myself "ease" back into GUTS I went with the standard pushup over the atlas 3's. I think I will continue to do them that way till I get solid at 50 on both ends. Then I'll move back to the Atlas 3's.

With the situps and squats I just went for it. I was pleasantly surprised at the numbers I hit, but am curious how much pain I will be in tomorrow. To help alleviate some of that I had a protein shake immediately following the workout to help the muscles rebuild.

I also wanted to mention I'll be starting a new series of pictures today, flexed so that I can judge some more of my progress. Tomorrow is also a climbing day so I'll post those results in as well. Especially with how it and GUTS play together now that I've bhad some time off.

Finally, I'd like to take a moment on the weight. As can be seen I'm still losing weight, and in fact had spent the last 3 days in the 147's, but last night had a very rich dinner, and fairly late in the evening. Was it worth it? Oh YEAH! Just need to try and eat a little earlier then 9pm I think lol.

Anyway, hope some of you still find this thread of interest and help in your own endeavors. Always happy to take on and answer questions. Good luck out there, and thanks for all the support and feedback :act-up:

Exercise:

Rock climbing for 1hour and 20 min.

Thoughts:

Legs were burning today before even climbing, quads mostly, from the TBS. All in all things went well though and I'm eager to get back out on the rock and curious to see how I'm feeling tomorrow morning when it comes time for the next round of GUTS. More to be posted!
