Fighting Cane & Sjambok: Hollyweed's Brilliant Discovery

Hollyweed turned me onto the WA-1 fighting cane that was invented by Newt Livesay. This is an item that does not look much like a weapon but is a major weapon. I've bene in Africa and own three Sjamboks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sjambok and recognised what the WA-1 is, an American Sjambok. The WA-1 stick is made of unbreakable material and Newt reports has been used by police and martial artists around the world; a claim I believe. There seems to be one major difference the WA-1 is made of harder material than a Sjambok and it more likely to break bone.

This is a nice thing to have along to make sure an animal doesn't attack you, or a mugger. I bought the 36" WA-1 and a 30" and also bought a Lee's 24" take along stick; made the same as the WA-1 but having a superior handle at Lee's Cutlery, I'd found that dealer on the Newy Livesay site as a distributor.

This is an item perfect for the lady in your life, a female can use this light, flexible weapon. You could use either Asian, African method's or use it like a European saber. The WA-1 can be used to thrust with since it is harder than a traditional Sjambok. Hope this helps everyone

PS for those that live in the West, a Sjambok (WA-1 or one of Lee's sticks that have a better handle) is perfect for killing snakes. In Africa it is the first choice for killing a snake. Better to not be bitten by a rattler!

I have several Sjamboks, old and new style – I prefer the old, all purchased from Cold Steel. The Sjambok video series that Cold Steel offers is great. Here’s a little book on the Sjambok you can purchase at Amazon – I have a copy.

I have not killed any snakes but did have an encounter with a Rottweiler / lab mix that was attacking my dog. One slash across his back and the dog stopped the attack and took off. I have no doubt that this saved my dog’s life, I get / got no pleasure in striking or harming a dog.

As a kid we used something similar to the Sjambok, a telescoping car antenna. In a crunch (emergency) they could be broken off a car and used in much the same was as a Sjambok, a slashing / wiping motion that would cut close and flesh, very effective.

GB Thank you I already have that book; and own three original Sjamboks. I lived in South Africa a short time and loved it there. Had a friend that was a Zulu Chief; never saw the Cold Steel video.

The Cold Steel Sjambok for self defense is a 3 DVD set and for anyone interested in the Sjambok I think it is well worth having. Don Relic also has a very favorable internet paper on the Sjambok. Try a u-tube search for Cold Steel - Self Defense With The Sjambok DVD. There are a total of 4 Cold steel Sjambok clips on u-tube. I think you’ll like them.
