View Full Version : Slow or fast, strength or heart?

I've noticed when I do very fast movement with push-ups or pull-ups, I can get in a groove and knock out many more repetitions than with slow movements. The faster movements definitely get my heart thumping more, the slower ones get my muscles aching more. So I can't help but wonder if they're actually doing the same thing or if they are affecting my body deferentially.

For slow I mean two seconds down, pause, two seconds up, pause. For fast simply going as fast as possible while maintaining form.

My inclination is that slower reps build muscular strength while faster reps build cardiovascular strength. Fast push-ups are equivalent of sprinting while slow push-ups are equivalent of squats. But maybe that's just all in my head...

Any thoughts?

I time my reps with my breathing so my pace never really changes. When you try "fast", do you breath more/less than one inhale/exhale per rep?

Actually when going fast my breath is arbitrary to the motion, like with sprinting. When slow, I match my breath to the motion.

Sprinting builds the leg muscles more than jogging at a slower pace.

It's obvious all rep cadence protocols have their value; do 'em all as time permits but beware of the injuriy potential of fast ballistic moves

Thanks for the advice and the warning. :highfive:
