I mentioned in Gordon's forum that I have family is Argentina and have an idea what might be coming to the USA. Argentina is the worst case come true; but it is livable if you take care. Keep alert and look for +1, if you see someone look for the second one, you see 2 look for the third.

In Argentina Crime is out of control, women kidnaped, rapes, children and girls sold into sex slavery, street crime common, armed robbery and muggings a everyday occurance not even worthy of calling the cops, shootouts with victims verses crooks, car jackings, burglaries, home invasions, car theft and drugs, prostitution and petty crime. But life is survivable for the majority!

You'll need a handgun, small, light, easy to conceal, portable, and only lacking one thing stopping power, and use multiple hits on the target to make up for that. Carguns are shotguns kept in the car and maybe rifles. I wrote a thread on the weapons you really need, here is a link http://www.transformetrics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3761 A .22 pistol or rifle loaded with CCI Stingers and good shotgun is the way to go. You want more power think a .357 magnum revolver or carbine. I have .22lr, .38 special. 9mm, .357 and 45 handguns; a small .38 or .22lr revolver or auto .22lr are the most commonly carried because they are small and light. If you expect trouble carry a big dog handgun or two; either have two guns or an extra clip for a fast reload.

Get in shape, be alert, learn self defence. Boxing is the easiest martial art to learn and the cheapest usually. It is under rated, MMA is now used by US Special Force mainly and that is a mix of Boxing, Wrestling, Kicking and Judo/JiuJitsu, MMA follows Pareto's Law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle Boxing is simple, fast and effective, it is 20% of the arsenal of MMA and results in 80% of the knockouts & wins and has workable techniques. My College Judo Coach & Sensi was from Japan, a Red & White belt, and he'd seen a high dan grade Japanese Judoka and Karate Experts taken out by boxer's in fist fights in Japan; he held Boxing in high regard. Once Cops mostly used just Boxing & Wrestling, as did Soldiers and Marines. Am not knocking your martial arts or training, just trying to give information for people reading this.

PS have a knife, even as just a tool, a baseball bat to check your tires. A cane to help you walk. Think.

If you are carrying a .22lr pistol, and forced to fire in self defence; remember double tap! If there is one person, triple tap!

Always carry CCI Stingers or the hypervelocity .22lr alternatives I recommended in your handgun (see the link to the recommended weapons in the other thread). The .22lr lets you place accurate fire on target. Practice is important.

You bring up valid points (and I'm a big fan of the Pareto Principle too). Many people undervalue the combative sports that allow full-force resistance. But very few things will teach more, than controlled sparring. Everyone HEARS about the old master who fights off young thugs. But the newspaper reports of those who do tend to be ex-boxers or ex-judoka or ex-military senior citizens.

Combative sports and being able to practice techniques safely at full throttle is how Jigaro Kano managed to dominate the jujitsu scene, when he introduced Judo. Its also how the Kosen-Ryu folks managed to dominate Judo (and become integrated into its curriculum).

Nothing breaks an ambush like a shotgun!

During the 1920s and 1930s it was somewhat common because of crime for men to have a "cargun" a shotgun with a short barrel carried in the vehicle, a few used a rifle usually a Carbine. This is now illegal but the Police continue to use a cargun. Slugs make a shotgun into a carbine and will bust an engine on a vehicle, buckshot was used to bust an ambush.

This is an old fashioned idea and now illegal, in times of rampant crime expect to see it done again.
