It's about time too! And I weigh 198lbs. Not too shabby. :)

I've been struggling to get all of my numbers up for awhile now and I'm finally seeing good progress. For a long time I was stuck around 7 chin-ups, I'd gotten as many as 9 in the past but was never able to hit 10. So I'm pretty happy about the accomplishment.

I know my numbers aren't all that impressive to a lot of people on here. Many of you are able to do 20 pull-ups and 100 push-ups in a single set, but considering where I started, I think I'm doing alright. And considering I'm a pretty average with no kind of athletic background, I'm pretty happy with my accomplishments. One day I'll hit 100 push-ups and I'll get 20 pull-ups and I'll have six pack abs, but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy my life and not obsesses or injure myself along the way. (BTW, I have been pain and injury free the past year which is a plus in my book)

Throughout most of the summer I had a long period where I wasn't gaining muscle, losing fat or adding to my repetitions. At least half of the year's training I was spinning my wheels and it wasn't until the past two months or so that I have really started to take off and see gains again. John explained to me that part of this was due to overabundance of estrogen due to being overweight. I know it's not a very manly thing to say I had too much estrogen in my body, but facts are fact; better for face them head on. The estrogen will "burn off" along with the fat and there's a point where that happens and the testosterone kicks in. John mentioned awhile back that it looked from my pictures that that had recently happened and sure enough, that was the period when my reps were starting to steadily increase and my stomach was beginning to shrink millimeter by millimeter.

But with hormones being an issue, I think the training method is important as well. Unfortunately, I think a big part of my problem was take a break from Transformetrics to try P90X in the summer. A lot of people will probably be aghast that someone tried P90X without stellar results. After all, just look at all the before and after pictures on the website and on the infomercials, right? Well, I don't want to bash Beach Body or P90X, I do think they put out a good product and respect their business but I'll just say don't get sucked in by the marketing. Many of the before and after pictures are not 90 day pictures, they're often after several 90 day cycles - in other words a year or more - and many are former athletes that have just gained weight. Again, I'm not bashing P90X and I'm not saying it doesn't work, obviously it works for some people. But it wasn't for me and therefore isn't for everyone.

So why didn't it work for me? I think it's because it has an excessive amount of cardio. The program is designed as a HIT style workout, exercising a bodypart once a week, with a large amount of cardio in between. (Royce will probably be the first to mention that you can't mix HIT with large amounts of cardio for most people) I think the cardio was actaully counter productive to burning off the excess estrogen in my body and I should have maintained a focus on strength training.

In the past couple of months I have switched to a daily full body strength training routine based on the Transformetrics system and have seen my best results all year in the brief period of time. More recently I have bifurcated this training into two 30 minute sessions; AM and PM. I feel this has really given me a performance boost and I really enjoy this type of training. This might not be for everyone either, just as P90X isn't for everyone. I'm sure some people work better with HIT or some other training system. But this is working well for me and I'm enjoying myself every step of the way.

These are my thoughts and insight. Just my opinion and experience. Take it for what it's worth to you.

-Joe

EDIT: Just for the record, I shot a video today. A little grunting and a little struggling, but I got it done.

Well, daggum it, you beat me. I'm not too happy about that. I read your post and decided to see what I could max at chin ups during lunch time. Eight. Don't wanna talk about it.

You're fifteen pounds heavier, too, but you can have that.

Your picture is the best yet, too.

Now I'll go sulk,
Tom

Hey Joe,

Thank You :highfive:. I appreciate the fact that you have been so diligent in your Transformation. And lets be real, 10 chin-Ups at 198 pounds is way, way above average. Best of all, you have only recently tapped into your strength and learned how to contract and control your muscles at will. So although 10 is absolutely great , don't kid yourself Joe, now that you've tapped into the secrets of dynamic strength you'll be able to take it 20 in the not too distant future.

But you also brought up something else, balancing testosterone to estrogen. This is something that you have totally accomplished Joe and you are to be commended for it. As I mentioned on the phone when we spoke, in my opinion, cardio is the last thing in the world that a man should do when estrogen is already too high. This is because research studies have proven that too much cardio burns off testosterone. That's why training too hard for too long is counterproductive. taking the two a day approach as you now have is far more productive and result producing not only in the realm of real world strength and fitness gains but also as relates to your energy level. All in all, nothing beats training at your own pace and developing the wisdom to be your own best personal trainer. Congratulations on the 10 Chin-Ups and all that you have accomplished.

Thanks everyone for your support!!

I just edited the original post to add a video I shot and put on YouTube today. Just wanted to preempt any doubts that I could actually do it. I don't make claims that I can't back up.

Tom, you've still lost more weight than I have! So you've still got that going for ya... for now! :male-fighter1:

John, thanks and thank you for all of the support and the information. I couldn't have gotten this far without you. :) Sky's the limit from here on out!

Congratulations, Joe! And thanks for the informative post. I'm happy for you and have more insight into how I'll get from where I am until where I want to be. And you're only ahead of me by 10 in your maximum number of pull-ups. :act-up:

I'm gonna keep a close eye on you, because I think you'll hit 20 pull-ups quickly. You've figured out what you've needed to to, and you've put in the work.

Thanks for being an inspiration to me.

Awesome job, sir. :highfive:

But tie some sandbags to the chin up stand. It looks like its going to fall over.

HA! Dan, good point!

I usually do my pull-ups from the other side where it's more stable because it's inside the structure. But for some reason I used outside for the video, I think I was just in a hurry and wasn't really paying attention. I'll bare that in mind for future videos :)

My weight probably has an effect too! Maybe it'll be more stable as I lose 20 or so pounds.

Joe - CONGRATULATIONS!!!! That is fantastic! I know that's been a goal of your for a while. It's got to feel GREAT to hit it! You are proof of what hard work and consistency can achieve! You are the embodiement of what transformetrics and this forum are all about.

Keep it up.

Way to go Joe!

You said that 10 is not an impressive number, but let's keep it in perspective. If you took 100 men off the street and asked then to do 10 pullups, what could you expect?

I'd wager to say 5 out of 100. Most men today cannot lift their bodyweight 10 times.
So that puts you in an elite group.

Again I say, way to go!

hey Guys,

I think it's great to see what Joe has done. And Joe, I'm curious, how long ago was it that you could not perform any? Believe me, you've come a long long way my friend and you have my respect and admiration.

Hmmmm, my relationship with the chin-up has been a very strange one, I think. I could do 1 from the very beginning. Then I probably added a rep a month or so getting up to 4, I remember getting stuck at 4 and asking for help last winter. My arms were also stuck a perpetual 13". Not long after that with some advice for you, John, and some others I was able to get up to 7 with great effort. It was at that point that hit a very long plateau, probably 6 months where I just could not consistently beat 7 chin-ups. Every now and then I would have some burst of energy where I would hit 8 or 9, but couldn't do it consistently and there were times where I couldn't even get 7 but most of the time I could.

This is one of the things I was thrilled about yesterday, to be honest. You may noticed I called this thread, "I finally got 10 chin-ups yesterday!" and not "I can do 10 chin-ups!" because I honestly thought I would run into the same rut where I had a "good day" and wouldn't be able to repeat it. Well, I wanted proof of my claim so I thought I'd turn on the camera and give it a shot and low and behold I did 10 again, no sweat! Now I'm fully confident that I can get 10 chin-ups whenever I want and will quickly increase that number.

I'm pretty confident in my abilities to improve now. After all that time of going nowhere, I'm consistently improving now.

With wide pull-ups, the first time I started I couldn't do any and my shoulders felt like they were being ripped apart when I tried. Then I got up to 3 max. As of yesterday I did 7! Standard pull-ups, I was able to do 1 from the start but then got up to 4 max. Yesterday I did 9 of those. Soon I'll have mastered 10 wide pull-ups, 10 standard and 10+ chins.

And BTW, arm and now at 14 1/4", so something's working :)

I'm going to start applying the same effort to my push-ups and try to get those numbers up. I really enjoy pull-ups so I focus on them a lot. It seems out of balance that I can do 10 chins but only 25 push-ups, so I figure I should work on that.

Quite an accomplishment my friend! I recently gained some weight and even at my puny 140lbs 10 pullups is quite a task.

Hey Nate, Thanks! I appreciate the support :) I think my form is pretty good, but my range of motion could be a bit better.

Hey Joe,

I think the only thing you could do to try to improve you range of motion is to go up a little more. BUT that is it. I wouldn't suggest going to lockout every time because you might get a little bit of tendonitis. And believe me this is not fun at ALL. Anyway again congrats on accomplishment and All the best.

Nate, just curious, have you ever had tendinitis? No matter what I did, I never got tendinitis until over twice your age.

Hey Tom,

I believe I got a little bit of a touch of it in my left elbow. Because how I was doing my pull-ups. I was doing to many and was doing them WAY to fast. But it was just something I was able to learn from. Anyway All the best.

I think tendonitis risk tends to sneak up near the end of a set when you try to really flex the forearms as your grip gives out. At least for me the only times i've ever had problems with it was during pullup contests, never from training on my own.

It certainly hurts like the dickens. I never had it, even though I went crazy with pullups, weighted pullups, extreme grip workouts. Finally this year, at age 52, I got it for the first time. When it is flaring and something bumps it, OUCH!

Now I'm finally listening to people for treatment and avoidance.
