Report: Americans Lack Civics Knowledge

Thought it was definetly worth sharing...

Americans earn a failing grade when it comes to civics knowledge, according to a report by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.

Of the more than 2,500 Americans who took a 33-question test on civics literacy, more than 1,700 failed. The average score was 49 percent. Sadly, elected officials scored even lower, with an average score of 44 percent.

Less than half of those surveyed could name all three branches of government — executive, legislative and judicial — and only 21 percent knew the phrase "government of the people, by the people, for the people” comes from President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Matthew Spalding, director of the B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies at The Heritage Foundation, said he was disturbed by the results.

“These are the kinds of signs that we should be looking at that are not good for the long-term health of the country," he told Family News in Focus. "This lack of knowledge does percolate up into our politics and causes a lot of the problems we have today in terms of how we govern ourselves."
