In the spirit of Christmas, I thought I'd post one of my favorite classic Christmas cartoons! This is entitled Christmas Comes But Once a Year and was produced in 1936 by the Fleischer brothers. This is technically a Betty Boop cartoon, though she isn't present, instead it has one of her supporting characters Grampy.
You're probably most familiar with Fleischer brothers' work on Popeye, Betty Boop and the early Superman cartoons. I feel that they were the greatest of the early animation studios, they constantly pushed for new technologies and utilized very, very elaborate animations techniques. One thing that sets them apart from their chief rivals of Disney and Warner Brothers was the very urban feel of the animation. While most animation companies at the time were based in California, Fleischer was based in New York City, and they used that gritty street feel in many of their animations. You get a taste of that in this animation here.
Also, like all of the Betty Boop cartoons, this has fallen into the public domain, so it can be freely distributed.
Enjoy!
