I'm not a martial artist; I've been participating in discussions of effective self-defense the past few weeks. A friend suggested that I check out Systema and Systema breathing.

I was already interested in breathing exercises/regimens for more than one reason. Intuitively, it makes sense to me that the way I breathe affects my health and fitness. Also, I sit at a desk most of the day...except for exercise breaks every hour or so...and know that I have the habit of breathing shallowly. Additionally, I've been trying to rid myself of bronchitis for about 5 weeks. I've been through medications and the bronchitis still interferes with my breathing.

As if that weren't enough...I experienced high stress at least 10 hours a day for most of 9 years. That's the main reason I moved to Costa Rica; my doctor told me a year ago that I had to eliminate most of the stress or die.

I've read information on the web about Systema breathing. Proponents say that the benefits of Systema breathing include increasing lung capacity and stamina, eliminating much stress, and enabling one to work out longer and more efficiently and effectively.

If any of you have experience with Systema breathing, I'll appreciate comments on how effective you found that breathing system.

I use there breathing waving technique first thing in the morning. Its basicly timing a wave of tension in your muscles with your breath. No matter how groggy i wake up after a few rounds of this i go form 0 to 100 in no time flat. Its basicly what we call pulsing in Transformetrics except a greater amount of attention is put on the breathing aspect.Good stuff i highly recommend incorporating some iff not all of there breathing methods into your routine.

I have no experience with Systema Breathing, but have done Yoga, Martial Arts and Qigong. Paul Bragg has a great book on Super Power Breathing for Energy and a Second book on Nerve Force. The Super Power Breathing is from Yoga.

I own most of Paul Bragg's books; oddly if you buy the Bragg books online using one of the book serach engines or amazon; you get the books much cheaper if you search using his daughter Patricia Bragg's name; she updated his books and was co-author.

Odd how the Monks in the East developed Shaolin and many Martial Arts and the Eastern Christian Monks developed European and Middle Eastern Martial Arts and Breathing.

Black Night, thanks for the feedback on your experience with Systema breathing. I'll buy either the Systema breathing book or DVD by Vladimir Vasiliev.

Mike, Yes I appreciate the Bragg recommendation. Based on your earlier recommendation, I tried to buy the Bragg breathing book from his daughter's website. Price is only six US dollars for a downloadable book. Her store is closed until January so I'll pick that one up in a week or so.

If anyone has any other feedback about Systema breathing, I'll appreciate it.

Thanks, akelly! Terrific! I've already downloaded the book...for FREE...and am starting some of the breathing exercises.

Another unexpected benefit of participating in this forum. :)
