You really can't go wrong mixing Savate/Boxing with JuJitsu. If you look at Pankration you'll see they used this same system under Alexander the Great and Ceasar. Everything old becomes new again, Pankration is just a mix of Boxing, Kicking, Strikes with Rough and Tumble Wrestling for Self Defense. Savate was always linked to la Lutte Wrestling and staff and cane fighting and originated in Marseilles, France that had been a Greek city then a Roman garrison.

Yeah, I'm sure if you look back far enough, you'll actually find the ORIGINAL original martial art. Everything else after that is just a "repackaged" version. :)

This art was actually pretty popular, back in the day. In his famous stories, Sherlock Holmes actually used it, to escape the clutches of his nemesis, Professor Moriaty.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author, called it Baritsu. Its unsure whether he changed the name to avoid infringing copyright, or it got mispelled at the printers(!) The wikipedia article on Bartitsu is very informative, too.

You are VERY correct, Sir! Glad to see someone else is interested in Bartitsu. :)
There is a new Sherlock Holmes movie coming out this year and the Bartitsu Society donated the two books they published to the producer so they would have a martial art "framework" to make Sherlock (played by Robert Downey, Jr.) more "authentic". Can't wait to see the movie! :)

Fighting in straw hats? That cover photo of the book is pretty cool.
"I say old chap, bad sport... I'm about to thrash you with my bumpershoot."
All kidding aside, this looks rather decent. Nothing flowery. The close range isn't much unlike escrima techniques.
Bartitsu Rocks!

Yeah, I've been trying to find a trailer for the movie, but there isn't one out yet. :(
They ARE playing up the fighting side of the movie, though. One site even specifically SAID that they would be using Bartitsu in the movie! Getting kinda excited about it now. LOL! :)

It seems pretty close to my martial art : yoseikan budo.
It was created by a japanese guy settled in France and who studied local martial arts : mainly French boxing (savate) and stick fighting. He added the concepts of karaté, judo, aïkido, kendo and realized a complete martial art in which stick fighting is mixed with kicking, boxing and chutes.
Here is a link of it for those who are interested :

Focus nice art, you can not go wrong with a balanced approach.
My guess is that ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Babylon and the Minoan Greeks all used a form of mixed martial arts. Pancration might be the oldest surviving martial art since it remains alive.

I'd rather think that ancient martial arts were complete ones. And with time, they have been divided into various categories : the various MA we know nowadays.
MMA is just a way of going back to original MA.
