This is an excellent e-mail GB sent me about the white zone mentality.
Here’s a news item that everyone should take note of. This is an example of someone being in the “White Zone”, completely unaware of their surroundings. It’s a bad place to be from a self defense viewpoint and as stated in the article a bad way to be walking around in general.
If a person is so zoned out that they’ll step in front of a moving vehicle just imagine how vulnerable they are to some predator looking for prey. Part of the problem is our civilized 21st century mind set, “not me, not here” and “hey I’m the pedestrian, I have the right of way, it’s his responsibility to look out for me not the other way around”. Hey you could be right, it is the other guy’s responsibility, ya, you could be right, dead right.
Much better to be in the Yellow Zone, listen, look ahead – look both ways, be aware, pay attention and avoid bad things be they oncoming bicycles, cars or shady looking characters. Headphone wearing pedestrians risk being maimed by cars and trains:

The 5 self defense zones of awareness:
White zone - Completely unaware an ideal victim and a possible accident waiting to happen.
Yellow zone - Alert, but relaxed, best block don’t be there. This is where a person should be most of the time.
Orange zone – You notice a potential danger, threat assessment – you see it coming and take action, get out of the way.
Red zone - defensive Action required.
Black zone – action taken and it’s not going well.
