Right on, well said!
Thanks for making me aware of Charles Garfield in your earlier posts. I managed to get hold of an audio cassette tape interview he did with New Dimensions on Peak Performance.
Here's some of my notes from the interview entitled Good, Better, Best.
Peak Performance Definition: "People who are committed to going way beyond anything they've done historically. People who value achievement in the service of a mission they care about."
They interviewed over a period of 18 years, 1500 extraordinary performers (Herschel Walker was one of them) in various fields such as business, arts, science, medicine, sports etc. What they found is that across the board, no matter the field, there is a particular, predictable set of skills that the people who do extraordinarily well will exhibit. They are as follows...
1) MISSION: Being powerfully committed to something that makes a difference, that matters to them.
2) GOALS: Clear goals, stepping stones toward completing their mission. Short, intermediate and long term goals that excite them.
3) FEEDBACK: Who do you have in your life, 2 or 3 people, that can provide you with accurate, useful information? Mentors, coaches, teachers.
4) RESOURCES: The raw materials to do what you do extraordinarily well. Training, education, support (friends/family), personal attitude and habits. It's an inventory of what's needed to take what your doing to a higher level.
5) REWARDS: What do you hope to achieve? What do you hope to get out of this as an end product? The peak performer has clarity around rewards.
