Hey Friends,
I received a long e-mail asking me about Isometric training, Alexander Zass, and the Mighty Atom. One question that was asked was if either man was a vegetarian.
Answer: In the book "The Mighty Atom", Atom makes a big point out of stating that The Mighty Gama whom he met as a young man while visiting India with his friend and mentor Volanko, in about 1910, and who had a profound impact on the young Joseph Greenstein was a strict vegetarian. He also stated that he (Atom) once did a radio interview program where the radio host was reading from a script and stated, "The Mighty Atom gets his incredible strength from eating 2 pounds of raw meat every day." To which he (Atom) lost his cool and replied,"That's a lie. I never eat raw meat and furthermore if you like animals you shouldn't eat them." So here's my point. I don't know for sure whether or not Atom was a strict vegetarian. But I do know that the book gives several indications that he was inclined very strongly (pun intended) toward a vegetarian lifestyle. So if he did eat meat, he did it sparingly and very seldom.
Now as relates to Alexander Zass, I don't have a clue about his nutritional discipline. That said, I personally would not be surprised that he may have been inclined to a natural diet much like The Mighty Atom since they both performed the same feats.
Also, though unrelated to Isometrics, Atom or Zass, I once read where Earle E. Liederman recommended a vegetarian diet to one of his students. There was no indication at all as to what the young man was supposed to eat. Just that Liederman recommended a vegetarian diet.
