Push-Ups For Building Your Physique
Hello Everyone,

Since I have taken up Isometrics as my foundation for the last two and a half years I have received quite a few e-mails asking me if I still perform Push-Ups, Sit-Ups, Squats, etc. and whether or not I still believe in them the way I once did.

The answer is what I have been saying all along that I absolutely do practice those exercises but not in the nearly the volume that I once did.

Don't misunderstand, there was nothing wrong with the high volume that I did but I would do it differently then if I had known what I know now.

So here is what I would do...

If I were in my teens today and knowing what I now know, I would use the Atlas exercises for sculpting my muscles just like I did then with one major difference...I'd incorporate a weight vest.

That difference means I would have been doing Atlas I, II, & III (rather than just #1) and working from sets of 15 to 25 and then adding a little more weight to the vest and starting the process all over at 15 again and working to 25 and continue until I got to where I would have wanted to stay. At that point, I would have worked out a maintenance program.

For strength, I would have done Power Belt Isometrics. The combination of Strength, Flexibility, and Endurance from such a program combining Atlas style exercises with Power Belt Isometrics would have been unreal. And the truth is...that is what I am doing now...I only wish I had known this 55 years ago. BUT better late than never.

Hello Everyone,

I've been out of pocket for a few days and its great to be back.

I just saw what Kenpopaul has written and I'm glad that there are those that understand that part of living, learning, and growing is to be able to look back and reexamine the path that has brought us to this point. The fact is I have learned a great deal by reexamining what I learned from Dr. Laurence Morehouse 40 years ago, and I have also been rereading my entire Physical Culture library that I got from my Grandfather and I'm blown away by how spot on it has proven to be.

Back when I was teaching martial arts I was doing high volume Atlas Exercises and I would do 500 continuous Atlas Push-Ups in my morning set and I was very proud of it because I had never met anyone that could even do 100 continuously of the extended range Atlas Push-Up, let alone 500 in 20 minutes or less averaging 26 to 27 reps a minute for the duration. In addition I could and often did sets of 100+ Atlas III's. And back then I ran marathons and ultras as well as practiced martial arts. And so, because I had mastered high volume I thought I knew what no one else knew about conditioning including Dr Morehouse who suggested that by adding more resistance I could get far better results in a fraction of the time.

That was then and this is now. NOW I AM LISTENING.

It wasn't until 1989 that I came across the teachings of Coach James Baley and what he taught about Isometrics. I wish I had come across it in 1969 instead of 1989.

Bottom line: I can't help but think I could have achieved even better results if I had only known then what I know now but as it is we only have today and what I know now is amazing to say the least.
