Another things pull ups do that machines can't is work a bunch of muscles that stabilize you on the bar. When I first started doing pull ups I was surprised how much it worked my abs.

I have to agree that pyramids rock big time. They are the reason I have worked up to 50 pull ups and 100 tiger bend pushups on my days off from GUTS.
