so answering your question on grip, i never heard of him working on grippers etc. just the act itself of straining against steel or iron and he had large hands for his size seemed to be all he needed,but when he did do some general training especially in his younger years it was mostly higher repetitions with a comparativly lighter resistance , some of the old time strongmans methods where actually contrary to what some people would say today, they believed that high reps with lighter resistance would not only build endurance but also toughen the tendons and ligaments
