Hey friends,

A young man wants to know if masturbation is a sin. At first I wondered if the question was for real. So for that reason I'm answering the question right here so that there can be no doubt about what I am saying in my answer and why.

So here goes. Is masturbation a sin? Answer: Yes, of course it is.. Why? Because in order to masturbate one must actively pursue lust in his thoughts. Bottom line: It is not possible for any man to masturbate without reinforcing sexual fantasy, either fornication or adultery into his thoughts. That's just reality. More often than not pornography is a major component of masturbation. In fact, masturbation is the only reason that pornography exists. So is it wrong? Of course it is. Is it a sin? Yes. Is it an enslavement? You bet it is for any man that does not repent of it and becomes addicted to it.

Here's the deal, I'm not condemning anyone. And I am certainly not trying to make anyone feel immense guilt. In fact, any man that says he hasn't been there, done that...is a liar. Still, it is important to not try to make excuses for masturbation or any other sin that any of us may be guilty of. And just as is the case with every other sin we must repent of it and turn from it. In fact, making excuses or pretending that any sin is not a sin is a sure way to reinforce it and prevent a man from repenting and asking God for forgiveness. That my friends is a guaranteed way to enslavement for any negative behavior.

Finally, remember what the Apostle Paul states in 1Corinthians 9:24-27.

The Need for Self-Discipline
24 "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize."

---John Peterson

P.S. I realize that what I am saying here sounds old fashioned and puritanical but it is the truth for every man that wants freedom and self mastery instead of enslavement.

John,

I couldnt agree more. It is most certainly a sin. God created our bodies to be used for his glory. How does this act glorify? Also, sex was created with man and women in mind, for children, and for pleasure between husband and wife. So if you have sex with yourself, it was not as intended.

Hey Tomman,

I know that it is a really tough issue for so many young men that are at that age where their hormones are literally raging. And I certainly don't want them to feel condemned. But on the other hand the truth is the truth and God has set standards in place for our own self protection.

Still, I remember how difficult it was for me when I was in my teens and I know that the temptations that today's young people face are far more intense than when I was in my teens. For that reason I come down very heavily on the side of God's grace and forgiveness for any human frailty and weakness. While I don't want anyone to feel condemned I do believe that it is critically important to not be enslaved by anything. That is why I decided to answer the question here on our forum. As far as I am concerned the real issue is freedom and to not be enslaved by anything.

John -

Your reply really gets to the heart of the matter. Regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs no one can argue with the fact that it is very easy to become enslaved by earthly desires such as sex, money, possessions, etc. . Epictetus, a 1st century Greek philosopher, stated that "Every desire degrades us, and renders us slaves of what we desire". I wouldn't go so far to say "Every" desire is bad, but it is a good idea to do an occasional "self-audit" to determine if you have your life priorities straight.

I'ma young man. And I agree with John.
I appraise self-discipline. A man should have principles.

A very sensitive, almost taboo subject. There are far worse sins but I agree with John for the simple reason that it is also a form of idolatry in the sense that an object of desire consumes the person. Very difficult to avoid in this society where sex sells but if you view it as a form of idol worship then you can see it for what it is and have the strength not to be ruled by it.

Anyone who thinks that Pornography is benign in deluding themselves.
It's power to enslave men and women, young and old is well documented.
It destroys homes, families, people.
It is even more destructive for the men and women who produce it. Think about it. That's someone's little girl who had parents, grandparents you are staring at one handed in a dark room. Would you want someone doing that while looking at your daughter, your son?

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Proverbs 6:27 KJV
Porn is destructive. And just because you like it doesn't make it benign. And just because you don't think it has effected you yet doesn't mean it hasn't, or won't.
