Hey Friends,

I had man e-mail a clip of Elvis Presley from the movie 'Kid Galahad' and it was obvious that Elvis really was in great shape. Anyway, the man said, "John, take a look at Elvis when he stands up to dance with the girl. He has a tiny waistline and his hips look extremely trim and tight. Do you know how he got that look?"

Answer: Back in the day (1962) athletes did lots and lots of sit-ups. And sit-ups gave you a flat abdomen and slim, muscular hips. The actors, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Robert Redford, and Robert Conrad had all done lots of sit-ups in their training and they all had that tight waistline with slim, muscular hips that Elvis shows in that clip. For example, I have a copy of the director's cut of "Cool Hand Luke' and they mentioned that Newman had a 6-pack before there were 6-packs. One of the actors asked Newman how he kept his abs tight like that and he said Newman told him "All it takes is 250 Sit-Ups on an incline board each morning."

As relates to "Kid Galahad, there is a sparring scene that's pretty intense and when Elvis askes, "Do I still get my $5. dollars" it's totally believable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfbQ296k5Ro

I remember that movie from when I was a 10-year old kid. I saw it at the 7-Hi drive-in theater and I thought Elvis was very convincing as the boxer "Kid Galahad".

Another movie he did where he showed his physique to great advantage was "Flaming Star".

In "Flaming Star" Elvis was shirtless through a good part of the film and it did not take a trained eye to note that Elvis had a lithe, lean, and muscular physique. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vSkt4x_3Uk

On another note, shortly before his death, Elvis told a good friend that he was going to fire everyone that had manipulated his life, go to an isolated area in Hawaii and get himself off drugs and lean, strong and healthy. Unfortunately, he died before he could make good on what he was intending to do. He died in 1977 at the age of 42.
