First marathon.A tough one as well!

Hello,

My last post here was about a sprint schedule. However now I have signed up for another challenge. On my doorstep is one of the worlds toughest marathons. It is the Beachy Head marathon. The course record is 2.48 which gives you some idea of its toughness! The first 800m is straight up hill!

Anyway it is at the end of October. I have 6-7 months to prepare. I want to complete it in a safe and sensible way but not look an idiot by collapsing half way! I would also like to maintain some of my hard won muscles whilst training for it. In other words I do not want to look emaciated as a result of running too much!

Is this possible?
All ideas and thoughts gratefully received!

John- you have done both ;a marathon whilst staying lean and muscular.How did you do this ?

I wouild encourage you to run much distance on hills at least 2 days a week, everyday will result in over training. You may have to do hill repeats if few hills are around. I would also do one day a week of some type of intervals like repeat 400s or 800s, up to a mile, Example 1x mile,1200,800,400 all at faster than marathon pace.

.This will also help you prepare for the heart rate going up during the race.. BW Lunges and squats should be a must.

I also would be running 30-40 mpw. Not a fan of people crash training. I also suggest running a few long runs of 15 miles over many hills. A 4/5 day plan is doable. This allows days off to strength train.

Seems like now so many run a marathon on less than 20 mpw, think this is dangerous and unhealthy. You may lose some muscle.

Make sure your replacing calories and anti oxidants. You can probably stay strong.
